On this episode, Travis talks with author, leadership coach, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) specialist, Steve Disselhorst. In his new book, Determined to be Dad: Journey of Faith, Resilience, and Love, he "offers his journey as a tribute to his desire for familial connection, overcoming self-imposed handicaps, and facing the harsh realities of two men trying to create a family.” As a gay father, Steve's path to fatherhood was anything but direct, and involved personal work to come to term with his identity - and the impact of that identity on the family he long envisioned. Together they discuss topics including paths to fatherhood for GBTQ men, developing different models of fatherhood than ones experienced as a child, men in the caretaking role, how a prostate cancer diagnosis impacts a man's masculinity, and the DEI perspective on men's work.
