The New Masculine

Saed D. Hill, Ph.D. - Connector, Son, Mentor

Episode Summary

This episode is Part 3 in a series on how we educate boys in our school systems where Travis talks to members of the Task Force on Boys in School, a special interest group out of Division 51 of the American Psychological Association (APA). The mission of the task force is to offer information and resources which seek to empower educators to cultivate learning environments that enable boys to embody their full humanity, question restrictive norms of masculinity for themselves, and experience schools as places that support their creativity, individuality and growth. On this episode, Travis talks with counseling psychologist, Saed D. Hill, Ph.D. who is developing a fact sheet on the impact of distance learning on boys that will be offered by the task force in the future. On top of this work, he is also the Assistant Director of Prevention and Masculine Engagement at the Center for Awareness, Response & Education at Northwestern University. Topics discussed include: growing up in the US as a child of immigrants, masculinity as a performance, the invisible curriculums taught in school, joy as a vulnerable emotion, providing different options for and permission around masculinities, and having developmentally appropriate conversations with boys about their masculinity.
