Nobody gets through childhood without some wounds. In this episode, author David Deane Haskell shares the ones he carried into adulthood and the work he did to stop being run by them. David and Travis talk about what it was like to grow up in 1980s Boston, what boys were taught about being a man, and how shame takes over the body. Shame shows up for both of them during the conversation, and they stay with it. David describes the exercise that cut his shame by 80 to 90 percent, why being healed doesn’t mean never feeling shame again, and why deciding not to share your story is a valid choice. They also talk about coming out in his forties, addiction, and codependency, which David sees as every bit as powerful as substances and which rarely gets discussed in men’s work.
