The New Masculine

Benterah Morton, Ph.D. - Father, Brother, Husband

Episode Summary

On this episode, Travis talks with educator and member of The Task Force on Boys in School, a special interest group out of Division 51 of the American Psychological Association, Benterah Morton, Ph.D. This episode is the first in a three part series on how we educate boys in our school systems. The mission of the task force is to offer information and resources which seek to empower educators to cultivate learning environments that enable boys to embody their full humanity, question restrictive norms of masculinity for themselves, and experience schools as places that support their creativity, individuality, and growth. Benterah's voice, as a former science teacher, assistant principal, campus principal and now assistant professor, offers a vital perspective on the role of educators in meeting the needs of diverse populations. Topics discussed included: diverse perspectives, the limitations of the provider archetype, intimacy, communication, creating a less hostile world, and how our education system can support boys embodying their full humanity.
