On this episode, Travis talks with therapist and author of the book Is Masculinity Toxic: A Primer for the 21st Century, Andrew Smiler, Ph.D. Andrew has authored 3 books focused on men and masculinity, is the past president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinities, and has provided years of direct, therapeutic practice with men and adolescent boys. In this book, he seeks to evaluate modern masculinity’s capacity for good against its potential for destruction, to review evolving definitions of masculinity, and to reveal societal pressures put on men. He most especially adds to the conversations on The New Masculine by laying out a timeline of distinct cultural shifts in the US and the influence they've had on our ideals of masculinity. And with that historical knowledge, he helps Travis explore the changes that are possible, and arguably necessary, for men in our current times.
